Reliable Home Inspector – Phoenix, Arizona
One of the most important steps in the homebuying process is the inspection. Inspectors sometimes get a bad rap, but one of the BEST HOME INSPECTORS IN PHOENIX is my associate, Tom Buckhardt, of B & A Home Inspection.
I originally met Tom through the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce a few years ago, and have consistently referred my clients to him ever since. I particularly like that he is methodical and very detail-oriented. He’s also incredibly honest. My clients love working with Tom because he takes GREAT pictures and he puts his reports online. The crisp, clear pictures, combined with the ease of delivery, make him fantastic to work with.
Tom worked for more than 20 years as a VP in claims for several property & casualty insurance companies, eventually striking out on his own to start his home inspection business in 2004. “I think of myself as a renegade from Corporate America,” he laughs. While working in the insurance industry, he specialized in contract claims, construction defects, and catastrophic claims for natural disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes. He is still licensed as an insurance adjustor in Arrizona, Texas, and Connecticut.
Tom’s also a very handy guy, with lots of experience doing his own framing, installing sheetrock and concrete, hanging drywall, and handling all manner of electrical issues. He’s worked on everything from home additions to barns, shops, and stand-alone garages. What’s this got to do with his job as a home inspector? EVERYTHING! Tom’s personal experience is a HUGE benefit for his home inspection clients, because it means he can instantly recognize problems other inspectors might miss.
One of the best-natured guys I’ve evern met, Tom was born on a farm in Long Island, New York. H
e’s lived in Arizona for more than 25 years, though, and describes it as “the best move I ever made.” Tom and his wife have two children, 21 and 12.
When I asked Tom what was his favorite part of the job as a home inspector in the Phoenix metro area, he immediately smiled and explained that it’s seeing the kinds of alterations, and upgrades homeowners have made to their properties. Things like add-ons, flooring, color and furniture schemes. Every home and homeowner is different, which is what makes the job so interesting to Tom.
Tom takes customer service to a new level because he truly loves working with people. “In claims, you meet people at their worst. Someone has died, they’re dealing with property damage … whatever the situation, it’s always negative. On the home inspection side, though, it’s always a pretty happy experience. They may be nervous or scared, but I try to reassure them and make it as positive an experience as possible.
“I really love being able to help them make the right decisions,” Tom explains. “The one question I always fall back on is: If I was my kid, would I want him to buy it?”
Tom is an FHA-approved inspector and he’s certified to test wells and water, as well as for indoor air quality and mold.
